At Dillbadin Primary School, we proudly teach Auslan (Australian Sign Language) as our specialist language program.
Learning a language is a vital part of a well-rounded education. It builds communication skills, cultural awareness, memory, and problem-solving abilities, and supports the development of empathy and respect for diversity.
We’ve chosen Auslan because it offers students a unique opportunity to develop visual and spatial language skills, while also learning to communicate in a way that supports inclusivity and accessibility for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
All students participate in weekly Auslan lessons, where they learn:
The alphabet and common signs
Everyday conversation skills
How to express feelings, ideas, and questions
Cultural awareness about the Deaf community and identity
Auslan is engaging, hands-on, and fun—and it reinforces the importance of connection, inclusion, and understanding. By learning Auslan, our students are not just gaining a new language, but also the ability to communicate in more inclusive and meaningful ways.
